  • Known As: Father of Indian Space Program

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai established ISRO in 1969. He believed that even a developing country like India could use space science for national development, communication, education, and remote sensing.

2. Laid the Foundation for India’s First Satellite:

He initiated the project that later launched India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975. Though launched after his death, it was part of his long-term vision.

3. Founded Physical Research Laboratory (PRL):

In 1947, he founded PRL in Ahmedabad, which became a premier institute for space and atmospheric research.

4. Helped Establish IIM Ahmedabad:

Dr. Sarabhai played a key role in setting up the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, one of India’s top management schools.

5. Promoted Satellite Communication & Education:

He strongly supported the use of satellites for rural education and development. His vision led to the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) project.

  • Padma Bhushan – 1966
  • Padma Vibhushan (Posthumous) – 1972

🛰️ Legacy:

  • The lander of India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission was named “Vikram” in his honor.
  • The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Kerala is named after him.
  • He is remembered as a visionary, scientist, and institution builder.
